Cadbury has introduced a new 'Grab and Go' size of its popular Dairy Milk chocolate bars at Morrisons, priced at £1.29. The 56g bars come in three flavours: Dairy Milk, Marvellous Creations, and Chopped Fruit and Nut. However, many shoppers have expressed disappointment, questioning the need for yet another smaller option.
Shoppers React to Smaller Bars
The new bars feature resealable packaging, with the slogan 'chunks for now and chunks for later'. But consumers were quick to mock the concept on social media. One Instagram user commented: 'There's never any chunks left over for later.' Another wrote: 'I don't understand the concept.' A third added: 'Chunks for now, none for later!' Meanwhile, a fourth remarked: 'They already do grab and go bars and they're at least double the size of those ones!'
Why Are Cadbury Bars Shrinking?
The smaller size is part of a broader trend of shrinkflation in the chocolate industry. Extreme weather driven by climate change has reduced cocoa yields in Africa, while severe rainfall and droughts in India, Brazil, and Thailand have also impacted harvests. Dirk Van de Put, CEO of Cadbury's parent company Mondelez International, explained on BBC Radio 4's The Big Boss podcast: 'Most consumers love their Cadbury. They want to have their daily Cadbury, but when they were paying £1, they don't want to then pay £1.50 or £2 for the same quantity. They would like to continue to buy something at £1. So what do we do? Yes, we reduce sometimes the size. We don't do that in a malicious way.'
Impact on Consumers
The new 56g bars are significantly smaller than the standard 95g, 110g, and 180g sharing bars. Cadbury claims the 'Grab and Go' format meets 'the growing demand for convenient treats'. However, critics argue that the price remains high for the reduced quantity, and that consumers are being forced to pay more for less. The bars are now available at Morrisons alongside Cadbury's Duo range.
