The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has confirmed the first wave of its planned store closures, with 87 branches set to permanently shut across the UK. The charity announced in June that it intended to close around 150 stores over the next two years as part of a strategic overhaul of its retail estate. Over 600 BHF shops currently operate nationwide, but rising operational costs and shifting consumer habits have rendered some locations financially unsustainable.
Closure Timeline and Impact
Under the plan, 90 stores are expected to close by March 2027, with the remaining closures scheduled by March 2028. The charity’s chief executive, Dr Charmaine Griffiths, stated: “Our shops mean so much to our colleagues, brilliant volunteers and communities across the UK. Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment.” She expressed gratitude to affected staff and volunteers, confirming that workers will be supported throughout the process, with redeployment opportunities offered where possible, and volunteers redirected to nearby stores or other roles within the charity.

Community and Staff Support
Dr Griffiths emphasised the charity’s commitment to its workforce: “We are incredibly grateful for the dedication of our staff and volunteers, and we will do everything we can to support them through these changes.” Affected employees will be prioritised for redeployment, and volunteers will be offered opportunities at other BHF stores or within the wider organisation. The closures mark a significant downsizing for the charity, which has been a staple on British high streets for decades, but the BHF stressed that the remaining stores and other fundraising channels will continue to support its research into heart and circulatory diseases.
