The Original Louden Tavern, a popular Rangers pub on Duke Street in Glasgow's East End, will close its doors for good at the end of August. The owners announced the decision on Facebook yesterday (August 19), citing soaring energy costs and falling trade.
Closure Announcement
Sharing the news, the Original Louden Tavern wrote: "Well sad news for the pub today. You know the saying: Use your Rangers pubs or lose them." The statement continued: "Well unfortunately the time has come for the Louden to close its doors for the last time and it's not being used. Please take on board and don't let this happen to any other Rangers pubs."
Final Weekend Event
The owners added: "Next weekend, the last weekend of the month, we will have a weekend of entertainment to be announced in the coming days. So hopefully see yous all for one last party at the Louden as this will be the doors closed for the last time."
Fan Reactions
Many loyal fans expressed their disappointment. One person wrote: "Sorry to read this. This is a blow to the community. We cannot afford to lose pubs, clubs and social hubs. These are the places that keep our people connected and our culture alive."
DJ Bairdy commented: "It's been a pleasure being the resident DJ for the last few years. Had some class times, it will definitely be missed."
Other punters recalled their experiences. One Facebook user wrote: "Great times there for my first Rangers games staying in Duke street early eighties." Another added: "Proposed to my now wife in there 10 years ago so sad to hear this." Someone else recalled: "This is really sad news. I had my first pint in the Louden, so many good memories from years ago."
Landlord's Concerns
Speaking to The Sun, landlord Richie described the closure as a "really sad day" for fans and team members. He expressed concern for the hospitality sector, saying: "The gas and electricity prices have been allowed to go uncontrolled and the business rates in Glasgow are crippling. I fear there will be much more to come as the hospitality sector has been absolutely crippled."
A goodbye event is scheduled for the weekend of August 29.
