Jack Russell Terrier: Cheap to Care For and Ideal for First-Time Owners

When it comes to choosing a dog breed, the options can seem endless. Dogs can bring plenty of joy and companionship to homes, but they can be expensive to look after. It can be hard to know which breed is right for you and your circumstances. There are plenty of pooches that range from small to very large, yet one breed stands out as easy to care for and has a long life expectancy.

Jack Russell Terrier: Affordable and Long-Lived

The Jack Russell Terrier has been branded ideal for first-time dog owners, and due to its size, it is cheap to look after. They can live for an average of 13 to 16 years.

The PDSA said: "Jack Russell Terriers are lively little dogs who love to run and chase. They’re confident dogs and very loyal to their owners (often picking a favourite person!). They’re always on the go, which makes them good for active households."

"They are clever dogs who love people, making Jack Russell's a popular choice for first-time owners. You’re likely to find that your Jack Russell can’t sit still and prefers to be with you all the time, whatever you’re up to."

Diet and Monthly Costs

A Jack Russell's diet will depend on their age, but they could eat good-quality, complete dog food. According to the PDSA, their food should be split into two meals. They recommend offering an occasional treat or using treats for training. The vet charity added: "Try to feed your dog at similar times every day as they like routine. Remember to leave a gap between eating and exercising."

They suggest that a Jack Russell will cost £50 a month to care for, which is lower than many other popular breeds, thanks to its size. In comparison, a Labrador Retriever will cost a minimum of £105 per month, a Cocker Spaniel is £80, and a French Bulldog is £70.

Exercise and Suitability for Families

Jack Russell dogs are active and need at least an hour of exercise each day. This could be a couple of walks with time to run off and explore. Playing will keep Jack Russell's mind active and prevent them from getting bored.

Explaining who Jack Russell dogs are right for, pet food company Scrumbles said: "Jack Russell Terriers can make wonderful additions to the right families. Their exuberant personalities and loyalty towards their human companions make them devoted family pets."

"However, their spirited nature and high energy levels may require households with active lifestyles to keep up with their exercise needs. For families with older children who understand how to interact respectfully with dogs, Jack Russell's can be excellent playmates. However, due to their energetic disposition, they might be too boisterous for households with very young kids or more sedate environments."
