Aluminium Foil Lettuce Hack Keeps Salad Fresh for Four Weeks
Aluminium Foil Lettuce Hack Keeps Salad Fresh for Four Weeks

Storing food correctly can significantly extend the shelf life of groceries. Appropriate storage methods help prevent wilting, moisture loss, and spoilage, which in turn reduce waste and save money.

Leafy greens such as lettuce can prove especially tricky, as they tend to become limp and discoloured quickly. A recent TikTok video sets out precisely how people in the UK ought to store their lettuce to keep it fresher for longer. According to the clip, one specific storage method will keep the salad essential fresh for up to four weeks.

The TikTok hack explained

In the TikTok posted by @itscheffatty, who boasts more than 480,000 followers, the chef demonstrated to viewers the correct way to store lettuce. He is seen wrapping a whole head of lettuce in tin foil, meticulously covering it before placing it in the fridge. The final result is a tightly wrapped parcel that forms a protective barrier around the lettuce.

The food creator said: "Aluminum foil makes lettuce last up to four weeks in the fridge. Now there's a bit of science to this. You see, lettuce goes bad when it's exposed to ethylene gas, which is the gas produced when other things in the fridge are going bad, such as when there's too much moisture or too much light."

He added: "The foil helps with all of it. It protects it from the gas quite a bit, protects it from moisture by allowing some gases to escape and blocks the light."

How to apply the method

Lettuce has a particularly high water content, which is part of the reason it can rapidly lose its crispness when kept in the fridge. Protecting it properly can help minimise both moisture loss and physical damage, both of which cause the leaves to deteriorate.

To attempt this approach, begin with a fresh lettuce head, ensuring it remains unwashed. Next, wrap it thoroughly in the foil before placing it in the fridge's crisper drawer.

Other foods that benefit from foil

Foil can also be employed to preserve other foods, including celery, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, and cheese. Fresh herbs, baked potatoes, corn on the cob and bread rolls can similarly remain fresher for extended periods when wrapped securely in foil.

However, avoid wrapping acidic or salty foods directly in foil for lengthy durations. Items such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, pickles and heavily seasoned dishes can react with aluminium. For these, opt for a glass or food-safe plastic container instead.
