Tom Jones Real Name: Stage Name Origin Revealed

Sir Tom Jones, one of Wales' most celebrated musical figures, was born Thomas John Woodward in Pontypridd. The singer, who rose to fame in the 1960s with hits including "Green, Green Grass of Home" and "Sex Bomb," adopted his stage name from an unexpected source.

The Story Behind the Name

In 1963, Sir Tom performed with Tommy Scott and the Senators, a group that built a substantial following across South Wales. One evening, allegedly at the Top Hat venue in Cwmtillery, Sir Tom caught the attention of Gordon Mills, a London-based manager who hailed originally from South Wales.

Shortly afterwards, Mills became Sir Tom's manager and rebranded him as "Tom Jones" in a strategic move to capitalise on the hugely successful 1963 Academy Award-winning film of the same name.
