Aldi has emerged as a serious contender in the pre-mixed cocktail market with its Belletti Hugo Spritz and Peach Spritz, priced at just £3.99 per bottle. The drinks have gone viral on social media, with shoppers hailing them as 'unreal', 'lush', and 'gorgeous', and some even preferring them over M&S versions.
What Are Aldi's Viral Drinks?
The two cocktail drinks by Belletti causing a stir online are a classic Hugo Spritz and a Peach Spritz. The Hugo contains aromatised wine mixed with elderflower and mint, while the Peach is a peach-flavoured sparkling aromatised wine. Both have an ABV of 6.9%, making them light and not overly strong. The bottles cost £3.99 each, with 250ml cans also available for £1.29 each.
Customer Reactions
Shoppers have been racing to snap up the bottles, leading to sell-outs in many Aldi stores. On TikTok, @inslusiwellness declared the Aldi Hugo Spritz 'sooooo much nicer than the M&S one'. @teriimelda agreed, noting the Aldi version was 'sweeter' with a stronger elderflower taste. @TheIvyHouse called it their 'all-time favourite', saying: 'I can’t believe the price… I picked this up for less than £4!! RUN to Aldi.' They added: 'When I say this drink is refreshing, I mean this drink literally makes you want to savour every mouthful. Summery, fresh, and blooming delicious!'
Some customers have been elevating the drinks by adding extras. Ellie (@elliemcadams5) shared a video adding ice, mint, and cucumber, then topping with prosecco. Others have used lemonade or soda water instead of prosecco. However, not everyone was impressed. @ajhome2000 said: 'I wasn’t impressed, I found [the Hugo Spritz] weak and tasteless.' @charlsclosed_xo commented: 'I love a Hugo, but it honestly doesn’t taste like it. Tastes like a white wine.'
Metro's Verdict
Metro's reviewer tried both spritzes. The Peach Spritz straight from the bottle over ice was 'very sweet and fruity', ideal for those who want a drink that doesn't taste alcoholic. To tone down sweetness and add strength, topping with dry prosecco was recommended. The Hugo Spritz was also sweet but with a stronger wine taste; adding sparkling water and lime made it more interesting. The reviewer concluded: 'Are these the best drinks I’ve ever had? No… But they’re cheap and cheerful, and at £3.99 a bottle, I can totally see why people are enjoying them – they’re very easy to drink, they’re not going to get you drunk too quickly, and a spritz just screams summer.'
