Aldi has unveiled plans for a new 1,788 square metre store on the edge of Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey, Wales. The German supermarket chain has submitted a planning application for the site at Four Crosses Business Park, located at the junction of the A5025 and B5420.
Job Creation and Parking
The proposed store would create 40 new full-time equivalent jobs, including one apprenticeship, and provide 124 parking spaces. Aldi said the site would offer residents a better, affordable shopping experience.
Anglesey, an island off the northwest coast of Wales, is known for its beaches, coasts, and historic ruins, making it a popular destination for staycationers. The new store aims to serve both locals and visitors.
Impact on Local Retail
A retail impact study commissioned by Aldi from commercial property estate agents Avison Young estimated that the new store would divert approximately £1 million of convenience turnover from the out-of-centre Waitrose in Menai Bridge by 2029. However, the study noted that Waitrose would continue to trade at about 40.8% above its company average benchmark even with the Aldi store operational.
Avison Young stated they did not believe the proposal would significantly impact town centre retailers, which are predominantly independent and specialist. Instead, the new foodstore is expected to divert much of its trade from existing large foodstores in Bangor, as residents may choose the more value-orientated and conveniently located Aldi.
Timeline and Next Steps
The planning statement confirmed that Aldi is targeting construction within 18 months of obtaining planning permission. The application is currently under consideration by planners at Anglesey council.
The statement added: "The proposal will give rise to various economic benefits, including the creation of up to 40 full-time equivalent jobs with one apprenticeship at the site and various other indirect jobs in construction, supply chain, support, etc."
