Aldi Fulford Road Reopens July 9 After 34% Expansion

Aldi's branch on Fulford Road in York is set to reopen on Thursday, July 9, 2026, following a significant renovation that expanded the shopping area by 34%. The store has been closed since May 17 to complete the final stages of construction, part of a broader £300 million investment in existing stores across the UK this year.

Store Expansion Details

The shopping floor has grown from 854 square metres to 1,146 square metres, while the overall site increased from 1,265sqm to 1,557sqm—a 23% rise. However, the number of parking spaces has been reduced from 107 to 92 to accommodate the larger store footprint.

An Aldi spokesperson confirmed to York Press that work began in January 2026, with the May closure allowing crews to finish the renovation. "We're very excited to announce that work is almost complete, and we're looking forward to welcoming our customers back to an improved store at Fulford Road on 9th July," they added.

Part of National Upgrade Programme

The Fulford Road store is one of 25 Aldi locations being upgraded this summer across major UK cities including Liverpool, London, Aberdeen, Nottingham, and Manchester. Aldi stated that enhancements vary by store but generally include wider aisles, more sustainable features such as energy-efficient fridge doors and natural refrigerants to limit carbon emissions, and upgraded Bakery, Health & Beauty, and fresh food areas.

The German supermarket chain, which operates over 1,080 branches in the UK, is investing £300 million in its existing estate this year. Stores in York, Liverpool, and Yarm were specifically selected for extensions to create a more spacious shopping environment.
