Met Office: 22 UK Areas Face Heavy Rain Today

The Met Office has identified 22 areas across the UK that will experience heavy rain in the coming hours, with some showers potentially turning thundery. A yellow thunderstorm warning is in effect for much of Northern Ireland from midday until 6pm, where 25-30mm of rain could fall in two to three hours.

Regional Breakdown of Affected Areas

Scotland is expected to see the heaviest rainfall, with up to 8mm per hour forecast in Aberdeenshire. Other parts of Scotland, including Inverness-shire, Moray, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Argyll and Bute, Glasgow, Ayrshire, and Dumfries and Galloway, could see up to 2mm per hour. By 7.45pm, the rain will shift to cover large parts of northern England, with Yorkshire forecast to receive 8mm per hour.

England and Wales Under Threat

In England, the areas affected include Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Yorkshire, County Durham, Northumberland, and Devon. North and mid Wales will also see a battering, with 1mm forecast, while southern and western parts of the country could experience scattered showers. The affected Welsh areas are Gwynedd, Ceredigion, and Powys.

Northern Ireland Warning

The Met Office's yellow thunderstorm warning covers County Down and County Armagh, where heavy rain and possible thunderstorms could lead to disruption. According to the Met Office, “conditions are forecast to turn more changeable, with showers or longer spells of rain.” The heaviest and most frequent rain will fall in the north and west, while the south and southeast will remain mostly drier and often warm.
