Aldi Brown Sauce Beats HP and Saves £2.61 in Taste Test
Aldi Brown Sauce Beats HP and Saves £2.61

In a head-to-head taste test of supermarket brown sauces, Aldi's Bramwells brand emerged as the clear winner, beating HP Sauce while costing £2.61 less. HP, the market leader priced at £3.60 in Tesco, was outperformed by Aldi's 99p offering, which delivered a richer flavour and thicker consistency.

HP Sauce - £3.60

HP sauce is a British classic, often used on bacon sandwiches and fish and chips. Its tangy, fruity flavour cuts through fried food heaviness, offering a sharp, salty kick. However, at £3.60, it is the most expensive option tested.

Waitrose - £1.15

Waitrose brown sauce was disappointing, with a watery consistency and weak flavour. At £1.15, it was one of the more expensive own brands but lacked the tang expected from a brown sauce.

M&S - £1.15

M&S brown sauce had a good consistency but an unexpected gravy-like flavour with a strange aftertaste. It lacked the tang of traditional brown sauce, making it a poor substitute.

ASDA - £1.22

ASDA's own brand sauce had a strong tang and full flavour but was let down by a watery consistency. At £1.22, it is fine but not a worthy replacement for HP.

Aldi - 99p

Aldi's Bramwells brown sauce was the standout winner. With a solid, full body and packed with malty, fruity flavours, it had a strong top note of cinnamon that added depth. According to the tester, "This is just as good if not better than the original HP brand and I will be buying it again." At just 99p, it offers unbeatable value.

Overall, Aldi provides the best HP dupe, overtaking HP in flavour for a fraction of the price.
