UK Hair Salon The Hair Movement Enters Liquidation

The Hair Movement Ltd, a British family-run hair salon and professional beauty brand based in Cardiff, has entered creditors' voluntary liquidation after eight years of trading. The company, founded by brothers Jonathan, Marc, and Benjamin Shipman, called a meeting of creditors on June 25, 2026, as confirmed by a notice in The London Gazette. Insolvency practitioner Alan Simon of Expedium Limited has been appointed to oversee the process.

Family Legacy Dating Back to 1929

The business, which operated a flagship salon and co-working space at Radnor House, Greenwood Close, Cardiff Gate Business Park, described itself as the culmination of almost a century of family expertise. According to its website, the founders' grandfather, Jack Shipman, brought the first blow-dries to Wales in 1929. The company stated: "In 1929, our grandfather Jack Shipman brought the first blow-dries to Wales, and after three generations in the industry we, Jonathan, Marc and Benjamin Shipman founded The Hair Movement." The company added: "The Hair Movement isn't just a brand. It's a living, breathing and forever changing entity."

Business Operations and Product Range

Alongside its Cardiff salon, The Hair Movement developed a range of professional haircare products, including smoothing treatments, shampoos and conditioners, sold directly to consumers and other salons. The company also operated a co-working salon model, providing management and booking services for independent self-employed stylists working under The Hair Movement brand. The business positioned itself as a premium British haircare brand, telling customers that haircare "needs to be simple to understand and it needs to do what it says on the bottle, all whilst being formulated with the best ingredients that nature and science have to offer." The company's website also highlighted its environmental ambitions, noting it continually reviewed its packaging "to provide the most eco-friendly packaging with the smallest carbon footprint possible."

Liquidation Process and Impact

The company entered creditors' voluntary liquidation, a process where directors choose to wind up an insolvent company after concluding it can no longer pay its debts. The virtual creditors' meeting was convened under the Insolvency Act 1986, allowing creditors to vote on the appointment of a liquidator and other matters. Jonathan David Shipman, a director, signed the notice on behalf of the board. It is not yet known how the liquidation will affect the Cardiff salon, independent stylists operating from the premises, or the future of the product range. Expedium Limited has been appointed to handle the insolvency proceedings, with creditors invited to submit proof of their debts before the virtual meeting. The Express has approached Expedium for comment.
