The Hancock, a popular pub in Newcastle city centre, will close its doors on Saturday, July 4, for a major refurbishment that promises significant changes both inside and out. The pub, known for attracting students, city workers, and football fans, will undergo a transformation that includes more televisions, a renovated beer garden, and fresh interiors.
Closure and Renovation Details
In an Instagram post, The Hancock announced: "The countdown is on! As many of you know, we’re about to begin a HUGE transformation at The Hancock, and we can now confirm that we’ll be closing our doors from 5th July to begin our major refurbishment project." The pub will cease trading on July 4 and reopen after the work is completed.
What to Expect
The refurbishment plans include more TVs than ever before, a full audio-visual upgrade for matchdays and parties, a completely renovated beer garden that will be bigger and usable in all seasons, new first-floor booths with individual TVs, and fresh interiors, signage, and a whole new look. The pub stated: "This isn’t just a refresh — we’re creating something truly special, and we can’t wait to welcome you back when it’s complete."
Impact on Regulars
Regulars will need to find alternative venues for a few weeks while the work takes place. The Hancock, located a short walk from Newcastle city centre, has long been a favourite for after-work drinks, watching football, and pre- or post-match visits to St James' Park. The transformation is expected to enhance the pub's appeal for matchdays and social gatherings.
