DPD is urging its customers to avoid a common packaging mistake when sending parcels to prevent delays. The delivery service, which operates across the UK, provides packaging guidance on its website, emphasising the importance of using new, high-quality boxes.
Why Reusing Cardboard Boxes Is Discouraged
DPD explicitly warns against reusing cardboard boxes. The company states: "Avoid using a carton more than once as its strength, and therefore the protection it offers, is significantly reduced when used multiple times." This advice aims to ensure parcels withstand the rigours of transit without damage.
According to DPD, customers should select packaging that does not bend or fold under the weight of the contents. The company advises: "Use good quality carton boxes that are strong and rigid. If the box bends or folds due to the weight of the contents it is not suitable. Ideally, for heavy loads, you should use carton boxes made of high-quality corrugated cardboard. These should preferably be double-walled to ensure strength, durability and protection."
Proper Sealing and Filling of Parcels
Equally important is not to underfill boxes, as underfilled boxes are more likely to collapse. All cartons should be sealed securely using shipping staples or strong tape. DPD's website adds: "To ensure a smooth journey through our sortation hubs and network, it is important the packaging is suitable for our operation. This may vary depending on the contents of your parcel."
Choosing the right packaging is the first step to ensuring items arrive in good condition. DPD notes: "Manufacturer packaging or product packaging alone is generally not sufficient for courier transportation as it does not provide enough protection."
Similar Advice from Parcelforce
Parcelforce offers comparable packaging guidelines. It recommends: "A corrugated cardboard box with a quality outer wrapping is best. Make sure the outer packaging is strong enough for the weight of the parcel. Items packed in kraft paper cannot be sent via our global express service. Please avoid reusing cardboard boxes because they weaken considerably after initial use."
Parcelforce also advises against using materials that could stick to sorting equipment, such as cling film, bubble wrap, string, or excessive tape, to avoid delays or issues. Customers are encouraged to check the specific guidelines of their courier before sending any parcels.
