Clothing experts are urging families to reconsider using clothes pegs this summer, warning that the common household item can leave permanent pressure marks on delicate fabrics. The advice comes from fashion brand Superdry, which highlights the risks of outdoor drying during the hot season.
While drying washing outside is quicker and often leaves clothes smelling fresher, pegs can create unsightly indentations that may not disappear. Superdry states: “Take caution when using clothes pegs, as they can leave unsightly and potentially permanent pressure marks on delicate fabrics.”
How to Protect Delicate Items
To avoid damage, Superdry recommends skipping pegs altogether for delicate garments. Instead, lay items flat on a drying rack or hang them indoors. The brand also warns against leaving clothes outside in windy conditions, as they could be blown away and lost or damaged.
For those who still prefer outdoor drying, Superdry suggests a vinegar spritz to enhance whitening: “Additionally, you can enhance the whitening effect further by lightly spritzing clothes with white vinegar before hanging them outdoors, helping the sun to keep your whites looking fresh.”
Preventing Stiffness and Creases
Natural fibres like cotton can become stiff when dried outdoors. To combat this, Superdry advises: “To avoid this, trying partly drying outside and finish off with a few minutes in the tumble dryer.” Gently pulling garments into shape before hanging also reduces the need for ironing.
Alternatively, moving a clothes airer outside provides the same fresh-air benefits without peg marks. By following these tips, families can keep their clothes in top condition throughout the summer.
