Neighbour's Morning Sprinkler Habit Causes £150 Car Damage Dispute
A homeowner has been forced to pay £150 for professional car repairs after their neighbour's automatic sprinkler system repeatedly soaked their vehicle, with the neighbour allegedly refusing to address the issue and even escalating the conflict.
The Daily Soaking That Led to Significant Damage
The dispute centres around a neighbour believed to be in his late 50s who has an automatic sprinkler system that activates every morning at 6:30am. According to the affected homeowner, one sprinkler head is angled directly toward their driveway where they park their car.
"Every single morning my car gets completely soaked," the homeowner explained. "We're talking drenched – water pooling on the hood, all over the windows, everything. My car is constantly covered in water spots and mineral deposits."
The homeowner has asked their neighbour five times to adjust the problematic sprinkler head, but received dismissive responses. The neighbour claimed the system was "professionally installed and calibrated perfectly" and refused to make any changes.
From Dismissal to Direct Confrontation
When shown how much water was hitting the car, the neighbour reportedly told the homeowner: "A little water never hurt anyone," and that they should be grateful he was "helping" to wash their car for free.
The situation escalated when mineral deposits from the constant soaking caused visible damage to the car's paintwork. The homeowner incurred $200 (approximately £150) in professional repairs to fix the water spots. When they asked their neighbour to reimburse the costs, he allegedly laughed and declared it their problem.
"I've started parking on the street but it's a 5 minute walk to my house and street parking is limited," the frustrated homeowner said. "My own driveway should be usable!"
Legal Boundaries and Escalating Tensions
In an attempt to resolve the situation independently, the homeowner adjusted the sprinkler head themselves one morning. This prompted their neighbour to call the police, accusing them of tampering with his property.
Law enforcement officials informed the homeowner that they couldn't touch their neighbour's property even when it was spraying onto their own land. Following this incident, the homeowner alleges the neighbour has actually turned the sprinkler to spray more aggressively toward their driveway.
"I think he's doing it on purpose," the homeowner concluded, suggesting the neighbour's actions had become intentionally malicious rather than simply negligent.
Public Response and Suggested Solutions
After sharing their experience on social media, the post attracted nearly 500 comments with many users suggesting retaliatory measures. Some proposed using grass-killing substances that could be directed back onto the neighbour's lawn, while others mentioned common kitchen salt as a potential solution.
The situation highlights the complex dynamics of neighbourly relationships and the legal limitations homeowners face when dealing with property issues that cross boundaries. With the homeowner now parking on the street and the neighbour allegedly intensifying the sprinkler's direction, the dispute shows no signs of resolution.
