A British tourist visiting Split, Croatia, was left shocked after discovering that certain everyday purchases were more expensive than in London. Mia Raja, who spent a week in the coastal city, found that drinks, fast food, and bottled water cost more than in the UK capital.
Unexpected Price Comparisons
According to Numbeo, the cost of living in London is 54.3% higher than in Split, excluding rent. However, several small but frequent holiday purchases are actually more expensive in Split. For example, a McDonald's Combo Meal, soft drinks like Coca-Cola or Pepsi, bottled water, and local cheeses all cost more in Split than in London.
Raja noted that two alcoholic drinks amounted to €42 (approximately £36.43), significantly more than the £11 to £15 she would typically pay for a cocktail at a bar chain in London. “My friends had warned me, but I still wasn't prepared for it,” she said.
Accommodation and Flights Were Reasonable
Despite the high prices for certain items, Raja found that flights and Airbnb accommodation were reasonable, totaling just under £200. The city offers plenty of free activities for tourists, such as sunbathing on the beach or wandering through Diocletian's Palace.
However, she advises Brits to research affordable food options before traveling. Examples include takeaway pasta from Bigoli, ranging between €7.50 and €9.90 (approximately £6.48 and £8.55), and pizza slices from local bakeries, ranging from €2 to €4 (approximately £1.73 and £3.45).
Split's Rising Property Prices
Split has become one of Croatia's pricier cities, officially becoming the country's most expensive city for property in May 2026, according to Opereta Real Estate. This trend may continue to impact tourist expenses.
