Queen Elizabeth II's Bentley with handbag holder up for auction

A Bentley Mulsanne once used by Queen Elizabeth II is set to go under the hammer tomorrow, with expectations it could sell for more than £340,000. The handmade vehicle, painted in the late monarch's favourite Barnato green, was designed specifically for her comfort during royal travel.

The car remained in royal service until 2019 and was frequently photographed arriving at royal events with the Queen aboard. As a security measure, it featured blue flashing lights concealed behind the front grille, along with a siren and a loudspeaker. The exterior also carried automobile badges on the front and royal crests in the rails on the rear doors.

Interior modifications for royal comfort

While the outside was impressive, the interior was specially modified for Her Majesty's ease. This included a dedicated handbag tray, which has since been removed and returned to Bentley. The vehicle also retains ashtrays in the back, electric privacy curtains, a TV with a DVD player, soft-close doors, and a deep lambswool carpet.

Two Bentley umbrellas and a set of thick woollen rugs, regularly washed and rotated by the monarch's chauffeur during royal service, also accompany the car.

Extended wheelbase for extra legroom

According to The Times, the vehicle's design is notable for its extended wheelbase, stretched by 250mm to create a 5.8m car, with all extra length in the rear compartment. This provided the late Queen with ample legroom and space in the back.

Ryan Cigana, a director at Broad Arrow Auctions where the car will be sold, told The Times: "We had some early interest from a member of a royal family in the Middle East until they realised it was right-hand drive. They wanted to drive it themselves so withdrew. My guess is that it could be bought by someone who calls Britain home but perhaps didn't grow up with a monarchy themselves, so will buy it due to a fondness for the Queen and what she represents."

Previous royal car sales

Cars linked to the late Queen have fetched high prices before. In 2023, a L322 Range Rover driven by the monarch and customised to her specifications sold for £132,750, setting a new auction world record for a 2004 Range Rover. The vehicle featured a modified front grille with covert lights, front and rear seat covers, a dog guard, a load space mat, side steps, and mud flaps.

In 2025, another personal car belonging to Queen Elizabeth II, her 2006 Range Rover V8 which she owned and drove frequently from 2006 to 2008, sold at auction for £175,000. That vehicle also included royal modifications, such as a dog guard for her corgis.
