Manchester United have confirmed that their new 100,000-capacity stadium will be built on land recently acquired from Indurent, approximately 350 metres from Old Trafford. The announcement was made on Thursday, July 9, as part of the Wharfside Strategic Masterplan, which outlines a vision for a new Stadium District designed for sport, entertainment, and year-round events. The new venue will serve as the centrepiece of the broader Trafford Wharfside project, respecting the heritage and traditions of the current ground.
Masterplan Details and Economic Impact
The masterplan for Trafford Wharfside includes enhanced public transport connections, improved rail links, and comprehensive walking and cycling networks. The project aims to create 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes, with projections suggesting a £7.3 billion annual boost to the UK economy. Collette Roche, CEO of the new stadium development, called it a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to deliver lasting benefits for supporters and the region.
"The proposed stadium site is ideally located alongside Old Trafford, enabling us to preserve the heritage, traditions and matchday rituals that are so important to our supporters," Roche said. "Atmosphere, affordability and accessibility will remain at the heart of our plans."
Community and Infrastructure Vision
Coun Tom Ross, leader of Trafford Council, highlighted the masterplan's ambition: "We want to create a great place to be, not just on matchdays but every day. Wharfside will become a network of attractive neighbourhoods with parks, waterside spaces, affordable housing, health and educational facilities, and joined-up public transport." The project also includes plans for walking and cycling routes to encourage active travel.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, part-owner of Manchester United, has previously expressed a desire to build a "Wembley of the North" as the club's new home. The stadium is expected to be the largest in the country, surpassing Wembley's 90,000 capacity.
