A defiant homeowner has caused a storm of controversy after chopping down a protected willow tree to make way for a £75,000 two-storey 'man cave' in his garden—despite furious objections from neighbours.
The 50-year-old resident, who has not been named, removed the tree—which was subject to a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)—to construct the extravagant outdoor structure, complete with a gym, bar, and entertainment area.
Neighbours Outraged by 'Selfish' Act
Local residents have branded the move 'selfish' and 'disrespectful,' accusing the homeowner of flouting environmental protections for personal gain. One neighbour said, 'It’s a disgrace. That tree was part of our community’s green space, and now it’s gone for a glorified shed.'
Council Investigating Potential Breach
The local council has confirmed it is investigating whether the removal of the tree violated the TPO, which could result in fines or legal action. A spokesperson stated, 'We take breaches of Tree Preservation Orders very seriously and will take appropriate action if necessary.'
Homeowner Unrepentant
Despite the backlash, the homeowner remains unapologetic, insisting he had the right to modify his property. 'I paid for this land, and I’ll do what I want with it,' he said. 'The man cave is for my family to enjoy—I don’t care what the neighbours think.'
The luxurious structure, which required planning permission, features underfloor heating, a cinema room, and even a rooftop terrace.
