Robert De Niro's £360m Nobu Skyscraper Begins Construction in Manchester
De Niro's £360m Manchester Skyscraper Work Starts

Hollywood legend Robert De Niro has officially launched construction on a monumental £360 million skyscraper in the heart of Manchester, a project he declares he is 'proud to be part of'.

A New Landmark for Manchester's Skyline

The 82-year-old actor, famed for his roles in classics like The Godfather and Goodfellas, is backing the development of Nobu Manchester, an ambitious 76-storey tower that will soar to a height of 807 feet on the city's vibrant Deansgate. Upon completion, the structure will not only be Manchester's biggest building but will also claim the title of Britain's tallest skyscraper outside of London.

The tower is a multi-use behemoth, set to feature 452 luxury homes and a 160-bedroom Nobu Hotel. The development is being constructed by the firm Salboy, with the completed operation to be managed by Nobu Hospitality, a company co-owned by De Niro himself.

De Niro's Pride in Manchester's Character

At a ceremony marking the start of work, De Niro shared his initial impressions of the city, even though he admitted he hasn't seen much of it yet. 'I haven't seen the city yet but I'd like to come back. Everyone is very nice, we're having a very nice time,' he remarked.

He was effusive in his praise, describing Manchester as a place with 'real character [and was] creative, passionate and strong.' The actor confirmed his long-term commitment to the project, stating, 'It's great being here in Manchester... I look forward to coming back when it is finished, if not before.' With an estimated six-year construction timeline, the star added with confidence, 'I think it is going to take six years and I plan to be around.'

A Global Boost for a World-Class City

The Nobu brand was first launched in New York in 1994 by De Niro, celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa, and film producer Meir Teper. The Manchester outpost will be its second UK location, 35 years after the first one opened in London.

Local leaders have hailed the project as a significant vote of confidence. Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig said the plans were a 'symbol that international businesses are choosing Manchester'. She emphasised the importance of such global names for the city's ambition, noting, 'It's not everyday you watch Robert De Niro take out an apartment in Deansgate is it?... The fact we are seeing global names... is a big boost for Manchester.'

Simon Ismail, Managing Director of Salboy, echoed this sentiment, highlighting Manchester's sustained growth. 'Manchester's been booming for over 10 years now and the population just continues to grow,' he said. 'To entice the likes of Nobu and what they bring in terms of quality and brand and exposure - it's enormous and I think this is a catalyst to really push on and do more in the city.' The first phase of the building was completed last year.

This development joins Nobu's portfolio of 12 global residences, which includes properties in the United States, Abu Dhabi, Egypt, and Brazil. The first Nobu Hotel opened in Las Vegas in 2013.
