Britannia Hotels positive Pontins Prestatyn update

Britannia Hotels has issued an update on the future of the former Pontins holiday park in Prestatyn, which has remained closed since November 2023. The company has confirmed that it is progressing plans for the site after preparing pre-application proposals earlier this year.

The proposals were submitted to planning officers towards the end of spring. A spokesperson for Britannia Hotels Group confirmed that the company had met with planning officers at Denbighshire County Council to present its proposals for Pontins Prestatyn.

Positive feedback from planning officers

The company said it had received positive and constructive feedback, which would help shape the next stages of the process. The update comes after the Prestatyn site first opened in 1971, bringing an end to more than 50 years of family holidays when it closed in November 2023.

Britannia also closed its Camber Sands site in East Sussex at the same time, followed by its Southport park in early 2024. All three former Pontins parks have remained shut ever since.

Previous proposals and speculation

Britannia Hotels previously submitted plans to Sefton Council in the hope of finding a positive long-term future for its vacant Southport holiday park on Shore Road. The site originally opened in May 1969.

There has been considerable speculation about the future of the former holiday parks, including suggestions that rival holiday operators could take them over. Reports that asylum seekers could be accommodated at the sites have also been consistently denied by the company.

MP calls for detailed plans

Clwyd East MP Becky Gittins said she had been in direct contact with Britannia Hotels since being elected, to understand its plans and support efforts to secure a future for the site. She highlighted its importance to Prestatyn's economy, history and identity.

Ms Gittins urged Britannia to move beyond early assessments and publish detailed plans and a realistic timeline for the site's future. She added that she would continue pressing the company for progress and greater clarity for local residents.
