One of Bolton's most iconic pubs is set to be demolished and replaced with a drive-thru coffee shop and a petrol station. The former Tavern Fayre at Hunger Hill, previously known as The Tavern On The Hill, is at the centre of proposals put forward this week by EG on the Move.
Proposed Development Details
The proposed development would knock down the current pub building and replace it with a petrol filling station and retail shop, eight car-fuelling positions, two dedicated HGV fuelling lanes, four super-rapid electric-vehicle charging bays (Tesla Supercharger), a drive-through coffee shop and associated parking.
The Tavern on Wigan Road was refurbished in the mid-1980s and in subsequent years became a 'go-to' destination for revellers from across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside. In its late-80s and 90s heyday it would host discos, DJs and party nights with a team of bouncers at the door.
Historic Significance and Community Memories
Its large car park and location close to the M61 junction attracted hundreds to the semi-rural pub, many to show off their cars. The pub boasted real fires and was also a destination for Sunday lunch.
The Tavern later changed to more of a family restaurant establishment but older generations still remember it as a 'big night out' destination and many locals still refer fondly in a Bolton accent as 'the Tavern on t'hill'. Bolton nostalgia pages on social media discussing the Tavern reveal that many people met their partners at the pub during its most popular period.
The current building was converted in 1986 from a 16th century farmhouse with the Tavern Fayre closing in 2023.
Planning Statement and Job Creation
A planning statement in support of the project said: "The application seeks to make effective use of an established, previously developed roadside site."
"The scheme would replace a vacant former public house and restaurant complex and extensive hard-standing with a modern roadside facility providing conventional fuel, super-rapid electric-vehicle charging, refreshments and associated services."
"The existing building is primarily two storeys in height and incorporates the original farmhouse together with a series of later extensions. The first floor contains former living and staff accommodation."
EG On The Move operates more than 160 petrol forecourts across the UK. The plans provide 30 car-parking spaces, 13 spaces associated with the filling station and 17 with the coffee shop. The existing access from Wigan Road would be retained, widened and remodelled to accommodate the anticipated range of vehicles. EG On The Move said the proposal would deliver approximately 40 full-time-equivalent jobs.
Planners at Bolton council will consider the plan in the coming weeks.
