Amorim ready to pounce as Man Utd's Ederson deal collapses

AC Milan are poised to capitalise on Manchester United's failed pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with newly appointed head coach Ruben Amorim eager to reshape the Rossoneri's midfield. The 27-year-old Brazilian saw his anticipated move to Old Trafford collapse late in the day, despite having already undergone a medical.

Ederson left in limbo

The deal's failure has left Ederson in a precarious position, having expected to leave Atalanta this summer. The Serie A side had agreed terms with United, but the transfer ultimately fell apart. According to Calciomercato, Amorim, who took over at AC Milan after being sacked by Manchester United in January, is now keen to bring the midfielder to the San Siro.

Milan's hierarchy has already made contact with Atalanta to explore a move for Ederson, who was away with Brazil at the World Cup. The club has signalled its intent this summer by securing a club-record £60 million deal for Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos.

Amorim's Milan revolution

Amorim, formerly of Sporting Lisbon, is determined to change Milan's recruitment strategy by targeting proven Serie A quality. Ederson fits that profile, having impressed for Atalanta since joining in 2022. The midfielder's versatility and energy could provide the dynamism Amorim wants in the centre of the park.

Milan will face Manchester United in their final pre-season friendly in Poland on 15 August, offering Amorim the chance to go up against his former side – potentially with a player the Red Devils themselves almost signed.

Amorim reflects on United tenure

Speaking at his first Milan press conference, Amorim apologised for not addressing United fans after his sacking. "It is hard to explain the mistakes as I would have to explain all the context of the last adventure," he said. "The only thing I can say is that I learn a lot and I did some mistakes. I didn't have the opportunity – and I am sorry for that – to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment. But I am really proud to have been their coach for a year."

He added: "Now it is a different history. There are a lot of things I could do better in the last experience. But sometimes it is like that. You need to learn to reach a different level. That is my thinking here. Everyone learns from their experience. I learn a lot. I did some mistakes. I will try to change but there are some things you never change. I think I will be better. That is all."

What's next for Ederson?

With his move to United off, Ederson's future remains uncertain. Atalanta are open to selling, and Milan's interest could provide a swift resolution. The midfielder has two years left on his contract, and a fee in the region of £35-40 million could be enough to secure his services. Amorim's relationship with the player – having coached against him in Serie A – could be a decisive factor.
