A rare 1p coin from 1882, featuring a tiny 'H' mint mark beneath the date, could be worth up to £280, according to a coin collecting expert. The TikTok user @coincollectingwizard highlighted that the coin, which appears ordinary at first glance, is actually valuable due to this small detail.
Unlike other 1882 pennies, which have the mint mark to the left of the date, this version has the 'H' directly beneath it. The coin features the young head of Queen Victoria, known as the 'bun head' due to her hairstyle, on one side, and Britannia seated with a shield and trident on the reverse.
The expert noted that the value depends on condition, with uncirculated examples fetching over £280. He advised collectors to check dates carefully, as pre-decimal coins vary in worth. The TikTok video garnered attention, with viewers rushing to examine their change.
This follows reports of other valuable coins in circulation, such as the Kew Gardens 50p, which recently sold for nearly £150 on eBay.
