Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is reportedly exploring a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, as the club's £35 million pursuit of Atalanta star Ederson faces collapse. The 25-year-old Brazilian, who was valued at £38 million, has emerged as a potential alternative after his proposed transfer to Atletico Madrid fell through.
Ederson Deal in Doubt
United had anticipated signing Atalanta's Ederson for £35 million, but conflicting reports now suggest the deal has collapsed. This has left Carrick with a midfield shortage, as newly signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea is unlikely to fully address the issue. Karl Darlow is also set to join as backup goalkeeper in the coming days.
Carrick's Midfield Plans
With Ederson's arrival uncertain, Carrick may repurpose Mason Mount in a deeper midfield role. Mount, who returned for pre-season training last week, joined United from Chelsea in 2023 for an initial £55 million but has struggled to justify that fee as an attacking playmaker. According to The Sun, Carrick is considering deploying him defensively, citing Mount's encouraging performances late last season and his work ethic.
Contact Made for Joao Gomes
Should the Ederson deal collapse, United could pivot to Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. The Brazilian impressed last season despite Wolves' relegation to the Championship, earning both the supporters' and teammates' Player of the Season awards. Brazilian publication O Globo reports that United have established contact over a possible move. Gomes was poised to join Atletico Madrid for £38 million, but the transfer fell apart after his representative Jorge Mendes prioritised Bernardo Silva's switch to Real Madrid, frustrating Atletico.
Gomes has also been linked with Liverpool, but United's interest could give them an edge in securing the Premier League-proven star.
