UK Car Production Surges in April Amid Strong Export Demand
UK car production rises 10% in April

The UK's automotive sector has experienced a notable rebound in April, with car production rising sharply thanks to increased overseas demand and improved supply chain conditions. According to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), output surged by nearly 10% compared to the same period last year.

Exports Drive Growth

Over 80% of vehicles produced in April were destined for international markets, with the European Union remaining the largest buyer. Strong demand from the US and Asia also contributed to the uptick, highlighting the global appeal of British-made cars.

Supply Chain Recovery

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of SMMT, attributed the growth to easing semiconductor shortages and logistical improvements. "The industry is finally seeing some relief after years of disruption," he said. "However, challenges remain, particularly in transitioning to electric vehicle production."

Electric Vehicle Push

The report also noted a steady increase in electric and hybrid vehicle output, accounting for over a third of total production. This aligns with the UK government's 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales, pushing manufacturers to accelerate their green initiatives.

Despite the positive figures, industry leaders warn that high energy costs and global competition could hinder long-term growth. The SMMT has called for further government support to sustain momentum in the sector.
