Turkey is set to rejoin the Formula 1 calendar with a five-year deal, bringing the popular Istanbul Park circuit back into the schedule from 2027 to 2031. The agreement was announced by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who pledged a "flawless organisation" for the event.
Return of a Fan Favourite
Istanbul Park, which last hosted a Grand Prix in 2021, is known for being the venue where Lewis Hamilton secured his record-equalling seventh F1 world championship in 2020. The circuit has been a fan favourite due to its challenging layout and historical significance.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali expressed enthusiasm for the return to Istanbul, highlighting its cultural significance and challenging circuit. "Turkey has a rich motorsport heritage, and Istanbul Park is a track that drivers and fans alike love," Domenicali said.
Filling Calendar Gaps
Turkey's return, alongside a two-year deal with Portugal, will fill vacancies left by Zandvoort's departure and Barcelona's move to a rotational agreement. The additions ensure the calendar remains robust and diverse, offering a mix of classic and modern circuits.
Erdogan emphasised the government's commitment to hosting a world-class event, stating that preparations are already underway to ensure the race meets the highest standards.
