Honda has announced a significant safety recall affecting more than 187,000 vehicles across the United States, citing a serious defect that could lead to complete engine failure and dangerous driving conditions.
The Japanese automaker is recalling specific models from its 2018-2020 lineup, including popular vehicles such as the Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey, and the luxury Acura MDX. The issue centres on potentially faulty connecting rod bearings within the V6 engines.
The Root of the Problem
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the connecting rod bearings in these vehicles may wear out prematurely and eventually seize. This mechanical failure can cause the engine to stall abruptly while driving, significantly increasing the risk of a collision.
Furthermore, the defective bearings could lead to a complete breakdown of the engine, potentially resulting in oil leakage. In the worst-case scenario, leaking oil could contact hot engine components, creating a fire hazard.
Which Models Are Affected?
The recall specifically targets vehicles equipped with 3.5-litre V6 engines manufactured between 2018 and 2020. The affected models are:
- Honda Pilot SUVs
- Honda Odyssey minivans
- Acura MDX luxury SUVs
Owners of these vehicles are urged to pay close attention to any warning signs from their cars.
Warning Signs for Drivers
Honda has advised drivers to be alert to several indicators of potential engine trouble. These include:
- Abnormal engine noises, such as knocking or rattling
- The illumination of the check engine light or oil pressure warning light on the dashboard
- A noticeable reduction in engine performance
Important Note: If any of these warning signs appear, drivers should immediately cease operating the vehicle and contact an authorised Honda or Acura dealer for assistance.
What Owners Need to Do
Honda will begin formally notifying registered owners of the recall by mail starting 17 June 2024. Affected owners are instructed to bring their vehicles to an authorised dealership, where trained technicians will perform a thorough inspection of the engine.
If inspectors find damaged connecting rod bearings, Honda has committed to replacing the entire engine assembly at no cost to the vehicle owner. This comprehensive repair ensures the complete resolution of the potentially dangerous defect.
For further information, concerned owners can contact Honda's customer service directly or visit the official NHTSA recalls website and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check if their specific car is included in this safety action.
