Professional cleaner Lynsey Crombie, known as Lynsey Queen of Clean, has revealed a budget-friendly method for cleaning hard-to-reach spaces in the home using just a wire coat hanger and an old sock. The technique, shared in a recent TikTok video, offers an alternative to feather dusters or telescopic flat dusters for tackling areas like under fridges, behind radiators, and beneath cupboards.
The Simple Two-Step Hack
In the video, Crombie demonstrates placing an old sock over the end of a wire coat hanger, then sliding it into the slim gap between a fridge and the floor. She narrates: “If you’re struggling to clean underneath your fridge and you’re not lucky enough to have this yellow duster, then don’t worry. Grab a wired coat hanger, an old sock, and you can get right underneath there. And what comes out will be so surprising - lots of dirt and dust.”
In the caption, she reiterated: “If you’re struggling to clean underneath your fridge and don’t have a flat-head duster, here’s a simple hack that works brilliantly! It’s perfect for pulling out dust, crumbs, pet hair and all those bits that seem to disappear under there. A quick, budget-friendly cleaning hack using items you probably already have at home! Let me know if you give it a try.”
Expert Cleaning Order Advice
Crombie, a regular on ITV’s This Morning and a best-selling author with her own cleaning product line, also shared advice on cleaning order to maximize efficiency. In a previous video, she explained: “When you clean, always start high. Dust first because dust falls like snow and when you vacuum, go in all directions - north, south, east, west - as this gets right into the carpet fibres.”
After vacuuming, she recommends using a steamer for a final polish. “I always love a good steam after vacuuming for that perfect freshness and polish,” she said.
Kitchen Cleaning Routine
For kitchen surfaces, Crombie advises a two-step routine: “Clean with warm, soapy water to remove spills and grime, then disinfect with a clean cloth. That’s how you get a true, deep clean on your kitchen surfaces.”
This hack and routine provide an accessible way for homeowners to maintain cleanliness without specialized tools, using items commonly found at home.
