Stoke Newington, a lesser-known area in London, has been recognized as one of the best places to live in the UK, boasting 72 independent shops and a quaint village feel. Independent Shopping Scene and Community Vibe
The area's high street is dotted with 72 independent shops, making it a cornerstone of the community. In 2024, Stoke Newington was included on Amex’s list of the UK’s top high street hotspots for independent retailers. Visitors and residents enjoy a vibrant mix of cafes, restaurants, and boutique stores, including children's clothing shops.
One Tripadvisor reviewer said: "This is a brilliant part of London. We spent the day walking around Abney Park Cemetery - its gothic chapel has recently been restored - and we went to Woodberry Wetlands, a really beautiful nature reserve. Stoke Newington is in Zone 2 but there's so much green space. The book shop on the High Street is brilliant, Rouge and Earlybird cards have some gorgeous things. We had a delicious roast at the Three Crowns. There's a lovely community vibe here. It's a really special place to visit!"
Notable Local Businesses
Among the local favorites, Esters is a popular coffee shop and brunch spot offering pastries, cakes, and savory meals. For homeware, Know & Love sells modern pieces from local Stoke Newington-based designers. Prep, on Church Street, is a supply shop with bright and unique kitchen items. Church Street Bookshop is a go-to for second-hand books.
Green Spaces and Accessibility
Clissold Park, located just off the high street, is a popular destination. The area also features Abney Park Cemetery and Woodberry Wetlands nature reserve. Despite being in Zone 2, Stoke Newington is not on a tube line, but it is well-served by bus routes and overground stations, providing easy access to other parts of London.
Another Tripadvisor visitor noted: "Not on a tube line, but that does not matter, lots of bus routes in and out of the area as well as overground stations, so getting around and to other parts of London could not be easier. Close to Dalston, and Highbury and Islington, once you have had your fill of Stoky you can explore a little further afield. You might find that you don't actually have to leave Stoke Newington though as there are lots to do and see right where you are."
Architecture and Further Exploration
The area is known for its incredible architecture, and visitors can discover antique arcades or take a walk around the cemetery halfway down Church Street. Stoke Newington is ideal for those seeking a lesser-known part of the capital with a strong community spirit.
