London rain forecast: Will it rain this week after drought?

Londoners may finally see some rain this week after weeks of scorching heat and drought conditions across the country. BBC Weather forecasts a 41% chance of rain on Monday night through to Tuesday morning, while AccuWeather predicts a wet weekend ahead.

Cooler temperatures and drought conditions

Temperatures topped 38C last Thursday before dropping to 26C over the weekend. The hot summer heat has turned London's parks into tinderboxes, with heightened wildfire threats in place across the capital's open spaces. As much as two thirds of the country is now in drought, and around 23 million people are under a hosepipe ban.

BBC Weather forecast

BBC Weather is forecasting a possible imminent downpour, with light rain showers possible between 1am and 6am on Tuesday before temperatures rise again to around 25C. Tuesday night is expected to be dry, but Wednesday morning could see scattered rain showers at 8am and 11am. The chance of rain will then drop to between 7% and 14% for most of Thursday, before rising to 41% on Friday night. Temperatures will stay around 22C, a welcomed drop from the 30C-plus highs last week. London could see drizzly showers from 5pm to around 10pm on Friday, with temperatures hovering around 21C.

Met Office and AccuWeather outlooks

The Met Office is forecasting a drier few days, with the chance of rain only rising above 10% at 11pm on Tuesday night. It predicts rainy showers in the early hours of Wednesday morning between 1am and 2am, ahead of another warm 24C day. There will be a 30% chance of rain on Thursday afternoon, rising to 50% by 2pm. Friday looks set to be dry, although the chance of rain will rise above 30% for most of the day.

AccuWeather is forecasting a cloudy end to August. Tuesday is set to be the cloudiest day and the only day with less than 10% chance of rain (9%), while Wednesday will see some sunny spells and highs of 23C. It says there is a 57% chance of rain on Thursday, with a 90% likelihood of precipitation on Friday. AccuWeather is also predicting a wet weekend, with scattered showers on Saturday, though the chance of rain will drop to 1% by Monday. The 10-day forecast also gives a glimpse into next weekend, which is also set to be cloudy and wet with highs of around 23C.
