Rare £2 Coin Error Could Be Worth £2,000

Britons are being urged to check their change for a rare £2 coin that could be worth up to £2,000. The coin in question is the 2014 Lord Kitchener £2, minted to mark the centenary of the First World War. While over five million were produced, a specific minting error makes some examples highly valuable.

The error, known as a mule error, occurs when the wrong die is used during minting. In this case, the coin lacks the words 'two pounds' on the obverse side, beneath the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Normally, the denomination is present on the head side.

Coin expert the Coin Collecting Wizard explained on TikTok that the error version has been selling for over £1,000, with some auction prices reaching £2,000. According to RWB Auctions, a variant of this coin sold for £1,000 in February 2024.

Collectors are advised to check their 2014 Lord Kitchener £2 coins carefully. If the words 'two pounds' are missing under the Queen's portrait, it could be one of the rarest £2 coins in circulation.
