A Maryland man has won over £450,000 after a rookie cashier mistakenly gave him the wrong lottery ticket. The regular customer, who has not been named, usually buys 'Cash4Life' tickets at a petrol station, but a typing error resulted in a 'Multi-Match' ticket instead.
The man told KENS5: 'I gave him the money and said, "I want to buy five Cash4Life tickets". The attendant made a mistake and gave me a Multi-Match ticket instead.' He added: 'I was like, "Oh, a new guy". He was so apologetic.'
The winner checked his ticket on the Lottery mobile app while driving to work and discovered it was worth $580,000 (£470,000). He later verified the win by scanning the ticket at the retailer. His wife commented: 'If anyone deserves this, it is him. He is a hard-working man, a good husband and a good father.'
The winner plans to use the money to pay off his children's educational loans and settle debts. He also hopes to establish an elderly patient care home with the remaining funds.
