The European Central Bank (ECB) has set the official release date for the newly designed €20 banknote, marking another step in the Europa series upgrade. The fresh note will enter circulation on 25 November 2025, bringing enhanced security features and a more contemporary look to one of Europe's most widely used denominations.
What's New in the €20 Design?
The updated banknote retains its distinctive blue colour scheme but introduces several innovative elements:
- A holographic portrait window featuring Europa, the figure from Greek mythology
- Improved tactile features for the visually impaired
- Advanced watermark technology
- New security thread with colour-shifting properties
Why the Change?
ECB officials explain that this redesign forms part of their ongoing commitment to stay ahead of counterfeiters. "Each generation of euro banknotes incorporates more sophisticated security elements," said an ECB spokesperson. "The new €20 represents our most secure note to date while maintaining ease of use for legitimate transactions."
Transition Period
Current €20 notes will remain legal tender and gradually be withdrawn from circulation. Businesses and banks will begin distributing the new design once supplies become available. The ECB assures the public that there's no need for immediate action - both old and new versions will coexist during the transition.
This follows the successful introduction of new €5, €10 and €50 notes in recent years, with the €100 and €200 denominations expected to follow in 2026.
