National Lottery Launches New Lotto Format with Two-Round Draws

The National Lottery has introduced a new format for its Lotto draws, starting with tonight's draw. The changes, announced by operator Allwyn, include a two-round system using two separate machines, each drawing six main numbers and a bonus ball.

Players do not need to alter how they play; they still pick six numbers from 1 to 59. Every ticket is automatically entered into both rounds, with prizes awarded for matching two or more numbers in a single round. The jackpot, starting at £2 million, is shared across both rounds, while other prize tiers remain fixed.

Allwyn expects the new format to more than double the number of Lotto millionaires, from around 140 to about 345 per year. The odds of winning any prize improve from 1-in-9.3 to 1-in-4.9. Jackpots can roll over up to five draws, with a must-be-won draw on the sixth.

Andy Carter, senior winners’ adviser at Allwyn, said: “This is a huge moment for players as we enter a new era for the nation’s millionaire maker, Lotto. From now on, every ticket gives you two chances to win for the same £2 price.”
