Angelina and Edward Lado, a Canadian couple, have won the lottery for a second time in six years, taking $675,000 (£357,000) from a scratch card that cost just $4 (£2.12). Their first victory, in 2018, was a $2.5m (£1.33m) prize from a game called Multi Millionaire Scratch ‘N Win, reportedly the biggest win from a scratch card in history.
Second windfall and a weekly option
When their numbers came up this time, the pair had a choice: take the lump sum or receive $1,000 (£530) a week for 25 years instead. They have not yet said which option they selected.
As they celebrate the latest windfall, the couple has shared what they believe is the secret to their success. Edward Lado said, according to People: “We play but modestly, especially now, but if you don’t play, you don’t win. We’ve purchased bigger tickets and not won anything significant on them and then Set for Life costs just $4 and we did.”
Reaction to the win
Edward also described his reaction when he learned they had won again. He explained: “I thought maybe she was bluffing when she told me, I really couldn’t believe it… I told her to calm down and when I come home, we will see if it is for real.”
Asked what he would do with the money, Edward said they were still “digesting the moment and letting it sink in” before making any firm decisions about what to do next.
First win reunited family
The couple’s first win had a deeply personal impact. They had moved from South Sudan to Canada 11 years before their 2018 victory. The money allowed Edward to find his mother, who he could not remember, and it turned out she was in Uganda. At the time, he said: “I will go to find her and hopefully bring her here. It’s very hard for me to believe that is now possible.”
