Common 50p Coin Listed for £45k Sparks Collector Warning

Coin collectors have been urged to exercise caution after a common 50p coin was spotted online with a staggering £45,000 price tag. The coin in question is the Diversity Built Britain 50p, released by the Royal Mint in October 2020 to celebrate diversity and inclusion in the UK.

An expert known as the CoinCollectingWizard on Instagram warned his 37,200 followers about the misleading listing. In a video, he explained that while the coin features a geometric design symbolising connection and the words 'Diversity Built Britain', it is far from rare. A total of 10.3 million of these coins were minted and put into circulation, making them very common.

The expert highlighted that many sellers list coins for thousands of pounds, but that does not reflect their actual value. He advised collectors to check sold listings rather than asking prices. Most circulated examples sell for between 50p and £1, with uncirculated versions fetching slightly more. He concluded: 'Don't fall for viral coin myths.'

The coin was commissioned by then Chancellor Rishi Sunak as part of the 'We Too Built Britain' campaign. Designed by Dominique Evans, it scores low on the ChangeChecker's Scarcity Index, confirming its common status. Collectors who suspect they have a rare coin are advised to seek valuation from a dealer or expert.
