Carers across North Lanarkshire are being urged to discover the financial support available to them during Carers Week, running from 8 to 14 June. The annual campaign highlights the challenges unpaid carers face and encourages individuals who may not identify as carers to seek assistance, including emotional, social, and financial aid.
Improved Support for Carers
Following several enhancements earlier this year, Social Security Scotland now delivers four distinct payments for carers. These include the Scottish Carer Supplement, Young Carer Grant, and the newly introduced Carer Additional Person Payment, all of which are exclusive to Scotland.
As of March this year, 11,645 carers in North Lanarkshire were receiving the Carer Support Payment, yet many more may be entitled to additional help.
Government Recognition
Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville commented: “Carers Week is a great opportunity to recognise the importance of unpaid carers in our communities. Our recently improved package of support, which is unique to Scotland, acknowledges the vital role carers play in our society. As a result, Scotland’s carers receive greater support than carers anywhere else in the UK. I would urge anyone who cares for someone to find out more about the support available from Social Security Scotland and in their local area.”
