Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is moving toward a public debut on Wall Street, marking a significant milestone in its rapid ascent from a little-known research lab to one of the leading AI firms, now valued at $965 billion.
Confidential SEC Filing
On Monday, Anthropic announced it had submitted a confidential filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a proposed initial public offering (IPO) of its common stock. The company stated, "This gives us the option to go public after the SEC completes its review. The proposed initial public offering will depend on market conditions and other factors." Anthropic has not yet determined the number or price of shares to be offered.
Record-Breaking Valuation
Last week, Anthropic revealed it had raised $65 billion in private funding, pushing its valuation to an extraordinary $965 billion. This makes the five-year-old creator of the Claude chatbot one of the world's most valuable startups. The announcement propelled Anthropic ahead of its chief rival, OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, both in market value and reported revenue. Anthropic now reports annualized revenue of $47 billion from selling its technology to individuals and organizations that use Claude for coding and other tasks.
IPO Wave in AI
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI leaders, Anthropic joins a wave of AI firms expected to go public, including OpenAI and Elon Musk's SpaceX. All three companies continue to operate at a loss, raising concerns about a potential AI bubble.
