UK Fuel Price Increases Hit Record High in March 2026
Fuel price rises in the United Kingdom during March 2026 have been described as unprecedented, setting a new record for the speed of increases. Analysis from the RAC reveals that the cost of filling an average vehicle surged by approximately £11 in a single month, outpacing the rapid escalation witnessed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Sharp Rise in Petrol and Diesel Costs
The average price for a litre of unleaded petrol jumped by 20 pence in March, climbing from 132.83p to 152.83p per litre. Meanwhile, diesel prices experienced an even more dramatic increase, rising by 40 pence to reach 182.77p per litre. This spike follows military strikes by the United States on Iran, which have disrupted global oil markets.
These figures represent a faster rate of increase compared to the aftermath of the Ukraine conflict in March 2022. During that period, petrol prices rose by 16.6p and diesel by 22p over a similar timeframe. However, it is important to note that current fuel prices have not yet reached the peak levels seen in July 2022, when petrol hit 191.43p and diesel peaked at 199.07p.
Middle East Tensions and Global Trade Impact
The ongoing situation in the Middle East, now entering its second month, continues to exert pressure on fuel costs. US President Donald Trump indicated on Wednesday that the end of military operations in Iran is very close. Despite this, significant concerns persist regarding Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping lane.
Iran has threatened to attack vessels attempting to pass through this strategic waterway, having already targeted an estimated 20 ships. This action has effectively halted trade operations through the strait, which serves as the sole passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. Approximately 20 percent of the world's oil and gas is transported through this route, making the Iranian threat highly damaging to global trade and contributing to the fuel price surge.
Expert Analysis and Consumer Advice
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, commented on the situation, stating: March has been truly unprecedented – fuel prices have never risen this fast in a single month. While this is the biggest pence-per-litre increase ever in a month, it's not as great in real terms as those seen during the 1973 oil crisis when the price of a barrel quadrupled.
He further noted: The increases drivers have had to endure in March 2026 far exceed those seen in the early days of the war in Ukraine. With long-term RAC research showing eight-in-10 people are dependent on their vehicles, these costs must really be taking their toll on both households as well as businesses.
Williams advised drivers to actively seek out the cheapest fuel prices to save money, especially with the Easter weekend anticipated to be the busiest on UK roads since 2022. To assist consumers, the Government has published a list of third-party fuel-price apps and websites that utilise data from its Fuel Finder scheme. These include:
- Confused.com
- DriveScore
- Fuel Finder UK
- Fuel Spy
- MotorMouth
- PetrolPrices.com
- RAC Fuel Watch
- The AA
Since 2 February, all UK forecourts have been mandated to report price changes to the Fuel Finder database within thirty minutes of any adjustment, enhancing transparency for consumers.
