An American financier with close ties to former President Donald Trump's family has reportedly signed a deal with Russian energy giant Novatek to develop natural gas in Alaska, despite ongoing Western sanctions against Moscow following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Details of the Agreement and Political Connections
The agreement, first reported by the New York Times, emerged after a meeting in August between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where discussions aimed to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During these high-level talks, US and Russian officials explored several potential energy deals, with sources suggesting these business proposals were intended to incentivise the Kremlin towards a peace agreement in Ukraine and potentially lead Washington to ease sanctions on Russia.
Gentry Beach, the Texas financier involved, confirmed to the New York Times that he had quietly signed an agreement for Novatek to develop natural gas in Alaska. Beach serves as chairman and CEO of investment firm America First Global, which holds interests in energy, mining and infrastructure. He helped raise funds for Trump's 2016 election campaign and contributed to shaping the administration's "America First" economic and diplomatic agenda. According to the New York Times, Beach is also a college friend of Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr.
Project Status and Corporate Response
Beach stated that the project remains in its early stages and faces significant hurdles, declining to disclose specific financial details. Novatek told the newspaper it was "indeed having negotiations on the potential use" of its technology to liquefy natural gas in remote northern Alaska, but did not confirm it was working directly with Beach. The Russian energy giant did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters, and Beach was not immediately available for additional comment.
The potential development would involve technology from Novatek's Arctic LNG 2 project, which is based on the Utrenneye field located in the Gydan Peninsula on the Kara Sea shoreline in the Arctic Circle, approximately 2,500 kilometers from Moscow.
Environmental and Legal Challenges
The news comes as conservation organizations and an Iñupiat group have recently filed legal challenges against the Trump administration's renewed push for oil and gas development in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. An upcoming lease sale scheduled for March 18 has drawn particular criticism, with opponents arguing it improperly makes available ecologically sensitive lands that have been long protected.
At least two lawsuits challenging the lease sale have been filed. One, brought by Earthjustice on behalf of the Center for Biological Diversity and Friends of Earth, was filed in federal court in Alaska. Another, filed by The Wilderness Society and Grandmothers Growing Goodness, was submitted in federal court in the District of Columbia. The latter group seeks to draw attention to the impacts of oil and gas development on Iñupiat communities.
This sale would represent the first in the reserve since 2019 and the first under a law passed by Congress last year calling for at least five lease sales there over a 10-year period. The reserve covers an area on Alaska's North Slope roughly the size of Indiana and provides critical habitat for diverse wildlife including caribou, bears, wolves and millions of migratory birds.
