The New Economics Foundation (NEF) has put forward a bold new proposal urging the UK government to subsidise 'essential energy' for every household across the nation. This initiative, designed to alleviate financial strain amid rising costs, would cover fundamental needs such as hot water, heating for two rooms, and the operation of key appliances like refrigerators and cooking devices.
Funding Through North Sea Profits
Estimated to cost approximately £4.5 billion, the scheme would be financed by increased tax revenues from soaring profits in the North Sea oil and gas sector. These profits have surged due to high oil prices triggered by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran, which has disrupted global supply chains and driven up energy costs.
Essential Energy Guarantee Details
Under the NEF's 'essential energy guarantee', all households would benefit from a freeze on prices for essential energy at current price cap rates. This measure is projected to save each household an average of £163 per year, with the poorest families seeing a reduction in their energy bills by up to 17 per cent. For consumption beyond the essential threshold, households would pay market rates, a structure intended to encourage wealthier families to reduce their energy usage and promote conservation.
