Chalmers Confirms: No Fourth Energy Bill Rebate in 2026
Government Ends Energy Bill Rebate Scheme

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has announced that the government's direct energy bill rebate scheme will not continue beyond its current phase, confirming there will be no fourth round of relief in 2026.

End of Direct Bill Support

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the Treasurer made the government's position clear. Jim Chalmers stated definitively that 'there have been three rounds of electricity bill rebates and there won't be a fourth.' This marks a significant shift in the administration's approach to tackling the ongoing cost of living pressures faced by households across the country.

Scale of the Support Package

The scale of the now-concluded programme is substantial. Chalmers revealed that the Commonwealth has invested almost $7 billion across the three rounds of energy bill rebates. This federal spending was supplemented by contributions from state and territory governments, which collectively added around an extra $1.5 billion to the total support package.

The Treasurer acknowledged the critical role these payments played. He described the rebates as a 'really important way that we provide help with the cost of living,' offering direct financial relief to millions of consumers struggling with high household expenses.

Future Focus for Cost of Living Relief

While closing the door on further direct rebates, Chalmers emphasised that the government is not withdrawing support altogether. He pointed out that the rebates were 'not the only way' the government is assisting those still finding times tough. This statement suggests a pivot towards alternative, potentially more targeted, measures to address economic pressures.

The decision signals a new phase in fiscal policy, moving away from broad-based subsidies. It places the focus on how the government will reconfigure its cost of living relief strategy for the future, balancing budgetary constraints with the need to support vulnerable households as the energy bill landscape evolves.
