EDF Offers 8 Hours Free Electricity on Christmas Day to UK Homes
Free electricity for 8 hours on Christmas Day

In a welcome move for households grappling with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, major energy supplier EDF has announced it will be providing eight hours of free electricity on Christmas Day this year.

Christmas Bonus for EDF Customers

The festive giveaway is part of the company's Sunday Saver Challenge, a scheme designed to help customers reduce their bills and their carbon footprint. As a special bonus for December 2025, all participants who sign up for the challenge will automatically receive eight hours of complimentary electricity on December 25th, running from 8am until 4pm.

EDF states on its website: "We’re on a mission to help you save cash and carbon while contributing to a more sustainable national electricity grid. That’s why we’ve launched our Sunday Saver challenge."

How the Sunday Saver Challenge Works

To take part, customers must sign up for the challenge via the Energy Hub in their MyAccount portal. The core concept involves shifting electricity usage away from peak hours, which are typically between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays.

The amount of free power earned depends on a customer's success in reducing their consumption during these peak times. For example, if a user shifts 50% of their peak usage, they can earn up to 16 hours of free electricity to use the following Sunday.

EDF has revealed that, so far, participants have collectively earned a staggering 6,238,028 hours of free electricity, which is estimated to be worth around £1.5 million.

Eligibility and Smart Meter Requirements

There are specific requirements to join the initiative. You must be an EDF residential customer aged 18 or over, living in England, Scotland, or Wales. Crucially, you must have a smart meter that is set up to send half-hourly readings to the supplier.

EDF also needs your mobile number to send updates on your progress and alerts for future challenges. The company encourages those who miss a sign-up window to request a reminder for the next one.

The energy firm explains the dual benefit of the scheme: "We want to encourage you to shift your electricity usage away from peak hours during the week... By taking some of the strain off the electricity grid at peak times, we're all helping Britain move towards net zero."
