The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) could be paying out as much as £74,980 in backdated benefits to eligible claimants following historical errors in disability assessments.
Who Could Be Affected?
Thousands of individuals who claimed Personal Independence Payment (PIP) between 2016 and 2017 may be entitled to additional payments due to miscalculations in how their mobility needs were assessed.
How Much Could You Receive?
Depending on the severity of the error, claimants could receive:
- Up to £5,000–£15,000 for standard cases
- As much as £74,980 in extreme cases
What Went Wrong?
The issue stems from a tribunal ruling that found the DWP had incorrectly assessed claimants' ability to plan and follow journeys. Those affected may have been underpaid for years.
What Should You Do?
The DWP is reviewing cases automatically, but if you believe you may be affected:
- Check your past PIP assessments
- Look for any mention of 'planning and following journeys'
- Contact the DWP if you suspect an error
Payments will be made directly to eligible claimants once their cases have been reviewed.
