The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an automatic festive cash boost to millions of UK households this December. However, a specific group of older people has been warned they might not receive the £10 Christmas Bonus payment.
Who Qualifies for the Automatic Payment?
The DWP confirmed earlier this year that there is no application process for the bonus; it should be paid directly into the bank accounts of those who are eligible. The payment is intended for individuals who were receiving one of a list of qualifying benefits during the first full week of December, known as the 'qualifying week'.
The list of qualifying benefits is extensive and includes:
- State Pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)
- Pension Credit (the guarantee element)
- Attendance Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Adult Disability Payment
- Carer’s Allowance
- Disability Living Allowance
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- War Widow’s or Widower’s Pension
The Reason Some Pensioners Are Missing Out
According to official DWP guidance, the key issue lies with eligibility. Older people who have not yet claimed their State Pension and who are not entitled to any other qualifying benefit will not receive the Christmas Bonus. The payment is not a universal gift for all pensioners, but is linked to active benefit claims.
For couples, the rules are more nuanced. Both partners can qualify if they each claim an eligible benefit. Furthermore, if one partner receives a qualifying benefit like Pension Credit and the other is over State Pension age, the non-claiming partner may still be eligible, provided both were resident in the UK, Gibraltar, Switzerland, or an EEA country during the qualifying week.
What to Do If Your Payment Hasn't Arrived
The DWP stated that most eligible people should have seen the £10 payment arrive in their accounts well before Christmas Day. If you believe you meet the criteria but have not received the bonus by the end of the year, the department advises contacting them from 1 January onwards.
By this date, all automatic payments should have been processed, allowing DWP staff to investigate any potential omissions. It is crucial for those who think they should have qualified to follow up, as the payment will not be issued without a valid claim on record during the specific qualifying period.
This annual bonus, while a modest amount, serves as a small additional support for those on lower incomes during the expensive festive season. Ensuring you receive what you are entitled to requires understanding the specific link between the payment and your existing benefit status.
