Newcastle United: Three Players on Notice in Summer Transfer Window
Newcastle: Three Players on Notice in Transfer Window

Newcastle United are in the midst of a significant summer rebuild, with a busy transfer market already seeing several high-profile departures and arrivals. After Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Aaron Ramsdale, and Max Thompson were released, the club sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur. Incomings include goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims, winger Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, and midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax.

Nick Pope's Future in Doubt

Nick Pope, Newcastle's number one goalkeeper for the past four seasons, is fighting for his future. Despite being a reliable presence for three seasons, errors crept into his game last term. The Magpies are reportedly seeking a more well-rounded goalkeeper who is proficient with his feet. While 20-year-old Jaouen has joined, his experience is limited to Ligue 2, prompting Newcastle to shop for a new number one. Should a new goalkeeper arrive, Pope is expected to move on, with a switch to his boyhood club Ipswich Town being mooted. Until then, he remains on Tyneside and may feature in pre-season.

Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy on the Radar

Joe Willock, who has been a key servant since 2021, delivered standout performances last season, including a goal against European champions PSG. However, with Newcastle pursuing midfield alternatives, Willock appears the most expendable option alongside Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Lewis Miley, Jacob Ramsey, and new signing Sean Steur. Jacob Murphy, entering his tenth season at Newcastle, remains a valuable squad member but has just 12 months left on his contract. A decent offer, possibly from Everton, could tempt the Magpies into a sale.

The Bruno Guimaraes Dilemma

The elephant in the room is Bruno Guimaraes' future, with the Brazil international keen to join Premier League champions Arsenal. At 29, Guimaraes feels now is the right time for a new challenge, though Arsenal have yet to make official contact. Newcastle insist their captain is not for sale and hope Guimaraes respects their decision. If he leaves, the club would need to seek a second midfielder to replace him.

Striker Conundrum

Newcastle currently have three strikers: Will Osula, Yoane Wissa, and Nick Woltemade. Osula ended the season well but remains raw; Wissa struggled with fitness but impressed at the World Cup with three goals in four games for DR Congo; Woltemade had a difficult second half and World Cup, despite 11 goals in his first season. Unless one is sold, a new striker seems unlikely. Should an offer arrive for any of them, the Magpies' response will be telling.
