Dream Golf Equipment Technician Job on Islay Offers Free Course Use and Accommodation
Islay Golf Technician Job: Free Course Use, Accommodation

Another Place, The Machrie, a luxury hotel on the Isle of Islay, is hiring a full-time Golf Equipment Technician to maintain equipment across its estate and championship links golf course. The role offers a salary of £33,000 to £35,000, with additional tips, and includes free use of the hotel's golf course and accommodation if required.

Role Details and Responsibilities

The hotel is seeking a skilled individual with at least three years of experience. The successful applicant will report to the Head Mechanic and be responsible for maintaining and repairing golf course equipment such as mowers, tractors, and utility vehicles. Duties include diagnosing issues, carrying out swift and cost-effective repairs, and developing a preventative maintenance schedule.

Candidates must also keep up to date with suppliers, ensure equipment meets current legislation, and conduct daily equipment performance checks on the golf course, making necessary adjustments as needed.

Candidate Requirements

The hotel is looking for candidates with three to five years of experience in turf machinery or mechanical maintenance, along with tractor driving and all-terrain vehicle experience. Applicants must be willing to obtain a first aid certification and should have a "positive, proactive attitude and ability to communicate effectively" as well as the ability to work in varied weather conditions.

Due to the remoteness of the Isle of Islay and its limited public transportation, the hotel states that previous island living experience is desirable, along with having a driver's licence. The advert notes: "On Islay, The Machrie embraces all-season island living. Long winters, limited entertainment and few distractions mean rural island life requires appreciation and resilience. Due to our remote location, you’ll need a valid driving licence and access to a personal vehicle."

Benefits and Allowances

The successful candidate will receive benefits including discounts at various restaurants and hotels, and the opportunity to use the championship links golf course regardless of ability. This 18-hole course spans 7,000 yards, featuring tees, contoured greens, and bunkers with breathtaking views.

The hotel offers team accommodation in same-sex residences or a monthly Islay Living Allowance for live-out team members, totalling £2,598 a year. This allowance helps staff afford the higher baseline living costs of staying on an island, but is only given to staff members who already live on the island or can arrange their own housing rather than staying in the provided accommodation.
