Woman, 51, Welcomes Twins After IVF Despite Criticism

Caroline Morgan, now 53, gave birth to twins at age 51 after undergoing six cycles of IVF. She met her partner Richard Burnett, then 50, online while working for the BBC in London. The couple moved to South Derbyshire and decided to start a family when Caroline was 44.

Unable to conceive naturally, they opted for private IVF after discovering limited NHS options. Caroline travelled to Spain for treatment, where she suffered three chemical pregnancies and a miscarriage at eight weeks. Despite the trauma, she continued with four more cycles. On her sixth attempt at age 50, she became pregnant with twins.

Caroline described her pregnancy as high-risk due to her age and carrying twins. She faced judgment from medical staff, recalling that doctors would ask whether the pregnancy was IVF or natural. Her waters broke at 30 weeks, and she delivered a boy weighing 4.5lb and a girl weighing 4lb by caesarean section on 19 April 2024.

After three days in hospital, the family went home. Caroline, now a stay-at-home mum, admitted the adjustment was tough, with sleep deprivation leading to hallucinations. She also faced negative comments online, with some people mistaking her for the twins' grandmother. However, she said she does not care about the criticism.

Caroline noted that her friends were becoming empty nesters while she was starting a family, leaving her feeling isolated. Despite the challenges, she expressed that the babies felt 'meant to be' with her and that she has more patience and gratitude as an older mother.
